The statement was made in the opening paragraph of this book that Saint John, as Canada's chief winter port, should have the first place in the consideration of British and Canadian shippers and importers. In , someone wrote a history entitled The Winter Port, the Great Achievement of the People of St. John. This was a bitterly political account of Saint John’s fight to become a major winter port, and blamed the Conservative Party for all of Saint John’s woes, while praising the Liberal Party for every success. Back in , under the direction of the Common Council of the City of Saint John, a book was issued, titled, “ Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada - Canada's Winter Shipping Port ” that had nearly two hundred pictures of businesses, churches, schools and better still gave information on many of them.
